2020 has been a year that many of us would rather forget! It’s been unprecedented, difficult and worrying.
However, many of us have spent more time at home and more time realising quite how important those closest to us are, whether we have been able to see them or not.
Unfortunately, Covid-19 has been responsible for a number of additional deaths across the country. It’s made us all face our mortality. The reality however is that we all know that we won’t live forever, irrespective of a global pandemic.
But do I really need a Will?
A Will remains the only way in this country to be sure that those we want to leave assets to when we die will benefit. It has been reported that over 50% of people in this country do not have a valid Will. This means that 50% of people are leaving the distribution of their estate (the assets they leave when they die) to ‘chance’; the rules of intestacy (the rules that ‘kick in’ when you die without a Will) do not necessarily reflect modern society. Second marriages, non-married partnerships, single people and those without family to whom they are close would inevitably fall outside of the rules if they died without a valid Will; it is likely that those they would choose if they had done a Will would not benefit.
Rebecca at Iluminate Legal is working at the moment to help many clients, both locally in North Hampshire and further afield, protect their assets for those closest to them when they die. Remote consultations and then doorstep and socially distanced signature meetings (for local clients) help Illuminate Legal offer the same tailored and considered service as always, with client safety (and of course Governmental restrictions) in mind.
Please get in touch if you need to update your Will, have never done one before or want to understand what would happen to your home or money if you died without a Will. There are no ‘stupid questions’; we are here to help.
With very best wishes, Rebecca.
