Happy New Year! 2017 has started! It’s a perfect time to get your personal affairs in order and get cracking on those well-meaning resolutions for the year ahead! Rebecca Reid at Illuminate Legal in Odiham is here to help you on the right track.
A few pointers to get you started when reviewing your personal matters should assist:-
- Diarise a time to take a look at personal arrangements and chat to your family/partner about any current arrangements/the need for new ones.
- If you have a Will does it need updating? If you don’t have a Will, would now be the right time to consider one to protect your family (and your assets) in the event of death?
- What would happen if you lost mental capacity? Do you have a family member you are concerned about? Would the new year be an ideal time to consider a Lasting Power of Attorney, to give everyone peace of mind if you needed someone to handle your property, finances or health?
Resolutions where you are actually getting something ‘done’ are a lot more positive; we feel good about ourselves when we get on with something that has been on our minds for a while. We find that giving up chocolate for example doesn’t last very long (to the second week of January if we are lucky, first week if we are honest!) but actually making a start at getting something in hand that has been on the ‘to do’ list for some time would be a wonderful way to get the new year started with a bang!
